About this listen

Chosen by the Companion Rolan, a mystical horse-like being with powers beyond imagining, Talia, once a runaway, has now become a trainee Herald, destined to become one of the Queen's own elite guard. For Talia has certain awakening talents of the mind that only a Companion like Rolan can truly sense.

But as Talia struggles to master her unique abilities, time is running out. For conspiracy is brewing in Valdemar, a deadly treason that could destroy Queen and kingdom. Opposed by unknown enemies capable of both diabolical magic and treacherous assassination, the Queen must turn to Talia and the Heralds for aid in protecting the realm and insuring the future of the Queen's heir, a child already in danger of becoming bespelled by the Queen's own foes.

Grabs. you quickly

A really good story that grabs you from the get go and pulls you into the storyline. The author has the uncanny ability to make you at one with the main character, you feel all her turmoil and experience all her sadness & frustrations as well as her happiness as learns her potential in life. Hope you enjoy this as much as I have!

Very good listen!

I read this book as a young adult and this reading was just as involving! All over again I was wrapped up in Talia’s story. It made me giggle and cry. Starting the next book as I work in the garden.

I’ve so loved listening to this narrator that I listen again and again. Mercedes Lackey writes such interesting tales that keep me company when I walk.

A dear old friend

I first read this book as a lonely 13-year-old and read it so many times the pages fell out. Rereading it now felt like a homecoming of sorts, and in it, I see some of the foundations of my self.

This is a sweet coming of age story about found family, trust and sacrifice. The most YA of the Valdemar series, it reads almost as a children’s book, but introduces you to a huge world of magic and myth, where the good guys are good and the bad guys faceless and evil. Rather than relying on fight scenes, most of the tension comes from self-discovery and growth.

If you enjoy “cosy fantasy,” this might be where the genre was born, a magic academy found before Hogwarts. Check it out!

Strange choice of accents

Mercedes Lackey is an American writer. Why in the world does Talia speak with a strong Scots accent? There are so many regional American accents that would be appropriate. I would have chosen an Appalachian accent, for example. Skif could sound like New Jersey. Royalty from Boston. Instead the highborn have some sort of British accent.
Other than that, the characters are expressive and individual.

5 Stars are not enough in the story review.

The characters and story are amazing and draw you in. 5 stars are not enough for the quality writing.

Quiet strength

I really enjoyed this book it has a quiet yet powerful quality to its storyline. The main character is slightly reminiscent to the main character in Trudi Canavan's book "The Novice". I find that the character grows in strength and confidence and so does the storyline. So I believe that the reader won't go wrong with the purchase of this book.
