About this listen

How much can you forgive in the name of survival?

A young immigrant is abandoned in Dawson at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush. She’s penniless and unready to be among 100,000 stampeders. Circumstances soon force her to move to the cribs of Klondike City to survive.

Don’t you want a better life?

A gold miner strikes it big and pursues the scarlet lady whose life could change if she gives up her old ways. She is pulled from her dark past for a while, but unknown and tormented memories lie in wait as she returns to the bottle for escape.

Based on the true life stories of Joyce Derenas’ ancestors, Anna's Wish explores life in Dawson in the early 1900s.

This very short book (under three hours) is another entry in the lives of the Poulin family who traveled to the gold fields in the early 1900s from Quebec. This specific entry is mostly about Anna and Veronica Pasteels, two sisters, abandoned by their father, who had traveled from Belgium, to Dawson. Anna caught the eye of Romeo Poulin early on when she was tending bar at the Green Tree Saloon . . . before she had started working "upstairs" at the saloon. Anna's sister, Veronica was sick, requiring medicine to survive, so Anna worked any way she could to keep her sister alive. This is a very sad story . . . in a long run of sad stories. Well told.
