About this listen
An Inconvenient Wife is a rich blend of suspense, social history (America in the 1880s), and passion. Chance delivers a powerfully written pause resister about a woman's struggle to escape the confines of her time, class, and gender.
Literary historical fiction is an extremely popular genre, as demonstrated by such best sellers as Matthew Pearl's The Dante Club and Michael Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White. Megan Chance is the author of Susannah Morrow, which captured the extraordinary drama of the Salem witch trials, as well as the historical romance novels A Season in Eden, The Gentleman Caller, The Way Home, and Fall from Grace.

Story
Grace Knox has grown up hearing the folktales of her Irish ancestors, especially about the warriors who fought for control of Ireland. In 19th-century New York City, however, these legends are far from Grace’s mind. She’s much more concerned with how to protect her family from debt collectors, and whether her childhood friend Patrick Devlin will propose. Patrick is a member of the Fenian Brotherhood, a group of young Irish American men intent on fighting for the independence of their homeland, whatever the cost.

When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly.

Intense and Captivating
Being set in the late 19th century, when women are considered inconsequential, it is little wonder that I felt frustrated by the way Lucy was treated. However, the story was so entwined with high society, its norms and expectations, that I was constantly intrigued by the humanness of this main character. The narrator was gifted in her ability to bring so many people of all social levels and sexes to life during the different phases of the book. Even as Lucy changed, you could hear the difference in her voice.
I work as I listen to books and found that my work was stopped during the highly tense and suspenseful periods caused by the narrator's timing.
This is a book I would endorse, first, for the story, but also for insight into the differences between men and women even today.

The truth of the title
This book is accurately titled and gives us a good rendering of the Gilded Age in NYC. One cringes at the ways women are addressed or thought of in polite society. A couple of places are a bit disturbing, but the overall plot and resolution support that.
Masterful voicing and narration by the reader.
