About this listen
In the days of ancient Israel, God warned through Moses: “If you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God… all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you” (Deuteronomy 28:15). These warnings were not abstract; they were tied directly to covenant faithfulness. Israel, having received the law of God, was accountable for their obedience. Yet over time, the people became complacent. They worshipped Baal and Asherah, sacrificed their children to Molech, embraced sexual perversions, and rejected the prophets. Jeremiah lamented: “This people has a stubborn and rebellious heart; they have turned aside and gone away” (Jeremiah 5:23). The very sins that triggered divine wrath in Israel are now visible in America—though in modern forms, they carry the same spiritual defiance.
At its founding, America bore many of the hallmarks of a people who feared God. From the Mayflower Compact to the speeches of early presidents and the inscriptions on public buildings, biblical values were honored. The Declaration of Independence acknowledged the Creator. Early universities such as Harvard and Yale were established to train ministers and advance biblical literacy. But just as Israel shifted from honoring God in its early years to adopting the practices of surrounding pagan nations, so too has America traded her godly foundation for secularism and self-worship. The words of Hosea ring true: “When they had pasture, they were filled; they were filled, and their heart was lifted up; therefore they forgot Me” (Hosea 13:6). Prosperity without humility leads to spiritual pride—and pride precedes destruction.
Perhaps the clearest sign of national departure is in the legislative realm. Just as Israel’s leaders permitted idolatry and even sanctioned it at the national level, America has passed laws that stand in direct contradiction to God’s Word. In ancient Israel, King Jeroboam made golden calves and declared, “Here are your gods, O Israel” (1 Kings 12:28). He restructured the worship of Yahweh according to his own design, bringing corruption upon the people. Today, America’s redefinition of marriage, endorsement of abortion, and celebration of sexual immorality mirrors that same rebellion. What was once called sin is now labeled as progress; and what Scripture calls holy is now condemned as bigotry. Isaiah warned: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness” (Isaiah 5:20). The prophetic cry against Israel’s moral reversal now cries out against us.
