After years of teaching intermediate students who never seemed to improve, I decided to find out what the problem was. Essentially, intermediate students get stuck because learning at this stage is a different type of learning than at the beginner stage. You have mastered the grammar and the basic vocabulary, but most textbooks just carry on like nothing has changed. Grammar! For many of us, the word triggers memories of finger-wagging schoolteachers, and of wrestling with the ambiguous and complicated rules of using formal language. But what is grammar? In fact, it's the integral basis of how we speak and write. As such, a refined awareness of grammar opens a world of possibilities for both your pleasure in the English language and your skill in using it, in both speech and the written word.

What a fun listen!!
The “American Idioms for Everyday Use”audiobook offered me a fun exploration of American idioms. The narrator's adept portrayal of each phrase brings them to life, making learning both enjoyable and accessible. The anecdotes add great enjoyment while learning. While the audiobook format is convenient, as I could listen while driving or going about activities in the house, I sometimes wished for the print version to reference idioms randomly. I still may purchase the print version to do just that. What truly sets this audiobook apart is its ability to make learning fun. As someone who enjoys exploring language's intricacies, I eagerly anticipated each new expression and the accompanying stories. From “raining cats and dogs” to “barking up the wrong tree” each idiom is presented in a manner that is both accessible and engaging. As a musician, I particularly enjoyed the section on musical idioms! I was surprised to learn the origin of some of these phrases, many from writers such as William Shakespeare. The quiz section pleasantly surprised me, revealing how much I had retained after listening. Overall, this work would be a delightful addition to any library, whether audio or print. It would also be a great gift, whether as a Christmas stocking stuffer, a White Elephant present, or a gift for someone “who has everything!”

Actually it’s great to learn modern slangs Gen Z uses
I like the fact the author have not chosen slangs rarely used in reality. Usage and examples are helpful. I recommend this book.

The same phrase can be used for several meanings.
American Idioms for Everyday Use is quite useful to decifer conversations. Depending on the context it is used, the tone it is verbalized with or who the recipient of the phrase is intended for or about, is beyond body language. Real words are being used but not the words commonly associated with their meaning. Many of these idioms started back in the late 1800's and have carried forward to today. I had no idea that "hold your horses" actually started out about real horses being under control and held. back. "Taking the bull by the horns" is another phase that exemplifies how the literal meaning has become the figurative meaning.

I love books about idioms and the origins of language! This one was so great and even included a lot of modern-day idioms and figures of speech, which my other books didn't! I enjoyed it so much, I listened to the whole thing from beginning to end!
