About this listen

“Narrating the story of Jane Eyre showed me that the bravery it takes for an unwanted orphan to forge her own path in life was as great in 1847 as it is today.” (Alison Larkin)

The epic love story of the plain, unwanted orphan with an indomitable spirit who becomes a great romantic heroine despite all odds still resonates with millions of fans all over the world.

In this brilliant, highly accessible recording, award-winning narrator Alison Larkin draws on her own adoption experience to bring Charlotte Bronte’s story to authentic new life.

After being subjected to cruelty in her foster home and at boarding school, Jane becomes a governess in the home of the mysterious, sarcastic and deadly attractive Mr. Rochester who harbors a terrible secret....

Exclusively for Audible, this recording is followed by three poems by Charlotte Bronte.

Alison Larkin is the best-selling author of The English American, an autobiographical novel about an adopted English woman who finds her birth parents in the US and the award-winning narrator of over 200 audiobooks including The Complete Novels by Jane Austen. Other classic narrations include Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass; Fairytales of the Fiercer Sex by the Brothers Grimm, et al; The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett; Peter Pan and The Inconsiderate Waiter; Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, freely adapted by Alison Larkin; and Agatha Christie's The Secret Adversary.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Alison Larkin's mellifluous voice and expressive tone are the perfect accompaniment to this acclaimed bildungsroman about "poor, plain and little" orphaned Jane Eyre and her eternally captivating romance with Edward Rochester. Larkin takes extraordinary care to elicit the full spectrum of emotions at play here, while conveying the gothic elements and psychological realism underpinning this classic. Listeners will be riveted by her portrayals of Jane's intelligence, integrity, and forthright manner, and of Rochester's intense and sometimes playful demeanor. Her nuanced characterizations of supporting characters of all ages, genders, and social classes are perceptive and revelatory. Larkin's thoughtful and subtly dramatic performance allows listeners to be fully engaged with the admirably resilient Jane throughout this delightful production. (Audiofile)

Jane Eyre is already one of my favorite classic stories, Jane is an orphan, raised by an uncaring aunt and was sent off to a charity boarding school. After boarding school she finds a position as a governess in a household with secrets.

I couldn't help but think as I was listening, that the narration by Alison Larkin is exactly as Charlotte Bronte would have liked it. Allison brings a sparkle to the story and the characters that draws you in until suddenly you have listened to a 22 hour book over the course of a weekend without even trying.

I absolutely adore Jane Eyre; it is one of those novels I get going back to. It's comforting to read something familiar, but I always get something ne out of it when I revisit it. Hearing it narrated is even better -- it's like getting a wonderful bedtime story. Larkin's narration of this classic is spot on. Her portrayal of each character brings them alive, and adds to the overall experience of the story.

This is the not the first time I’ve enjoyed this book, but it is the first audio rendition. Alison Larkin is the perfect one to do this book. I love that she produces the classics under Alison Larkin Presents, and also narrates most of them, this one included. This is the seventh book I have listened to by her, and I would definitely listen to another.

Jane Eyre

I knew Larkin could narrate classics because I heard her complete novels of Jane Austen, her Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and recently her award winning recording of The Secret Garden, all of which I loved. Jane Eyre is my favorite novel and I was very excited to find out about what can only be described as a match made in heaven. Larkin gets it all - the depth, the wit, the seriousness and deep pain of Jane's journey together with the humanity. It had me spellbound. Stuck at home during the Covid 19 pandemic, Larkin took me into another world and the poems at the end were a truly delightful addition! Well done Audible!

This recording is simply FANTASTIC!

This is the first time I've listened to this classic performed in audiobook. I'm so glad I picked up this presentation by Alison Larkin. She was fantastic! It's been so long since I've read Jane Eyre and Alison's performance was perfect. She captured the innocence and strength of Jane, the rough and erratic emotional state of Mr. Rochester and the strictness of Mr. Rivers' nature. Perfect! I will enjoy listening to this presentation again and again.
