About this listen

For years Akiri has lived as a hunted man. Hunted by King Zemel. Hunted by the Gods. Hunted by his destiny. Not even on the southern continent where his home and lands are a distant dream can he escape their reach.

Now the time has come to stop running. With Kyra at his side, he answers the call for home. And together they will face whatever fate awaits them. Through the power of their bond, they will shed the yoke of the gods. Through their deeds, they will ensure that the names of Akiri and Kyra will always be remembered.

I can't believe no one has written a review, so i guess I will. I don't write many, but this series deserves some review.

the story in this book is not quite up the others, but i very much enjoyed most of it. it seems to jump around more than the others and skips what seems like weeks at a time. Recalling past experiences was not overly done and nicely fit the situation. the closing was very predictable and the foreshadowing was hard to miss. the battle with the king was anticlimactic, but it was always going to be one sided and how that battle concluded was known long before the fight started.

that said, this was a good, but not great conclusion to this story. the tale can continue, but i would hope BDA would stop while he is ahead. it took several years to get this one finished, and i don't know if i would continue if he put a sequel or spinoff out. if you enjoyed that first three, you will probably enjoy this one.

Conclusion? or Continue?

One of the most captivating series I’ve listened to in a long time. Almost as good as the half orc series.

The title Dragon Rider is misleading and the book fails to deliver on nearly every promise. Kyra is the dragon, but even after five years have passed since the first book, she’s still portrayed as too young to fight — a frustrating excuse that keeps getting dragged out. Despite her potential, she never truly gets to shine in battle.

The supposed “rider” barely rides her — maybe 100 km total — and never during a fight. Just when it seems like they might finally unite as a powerful team, the bond is broken. Then he’s handed a powerful scepter but does nothing with it, just stands there holding it like dead weight. He comes off as powerless and cowardly.

The final battle is rushed and predictable. Kyra ends up killing the king easily, with no buildup or real struggle. Akiri’s skills are wasted. The protagonist is sidelined. The payoff? Nonexistent.

This book wraps the story up with laziness and missed potential. Disappointing to the end.
