About this listen

Meet Abby, a six-foot tall, 300-pound middle schooler with giant brains and pint-sized confidence. Despite Abby's best efforts to be invisible, she is pulled into her school’s debate team by Tina, the adorkable new girl at school. Just as Abby starts to think debate is something she could be good at, her confidence is shattered when she finds out this year's debate topic: combating childhood obesity. Debate now feels like another way the universe has made her feel huge and small all at the same time. Will she ever know what it’s like to feel as big on the inside as she does on the outside? Abby’s Big Debate is a charming, inspiring story about self-acceptance, playing to your strengths, hard work, family, friendship and love.

This is an engaging, and heartfelt story. At times. We have all felt on the outside as Abby does. The Story doesn’t dwell too long Abby feeling that she is overweight, but spends more time with her working through creating the life for herself that she wants, despite some bumps.

Great YA story about making what you want out of life

This story is one for everyone, although I’m aware that it’s aimed towards middle schoolers. The narration is fantastic, the plot is really unexpected in the best kind of way and let me tell you…I cried listening to this book 2-3 times. It just hits. Listen and you’ll see.

Profound

Middle school age kids will be able to relate to Abby’s Big Debate — trying to find your place in the world (your school), on the debate team, and in your family. It’s all hard, but Abby, Tina, and the kids on the debate club manage to find their way.   This story shines in the debate scenes.
