"A escrava" consiste em uma seleção de importantes textos em prosa e poemas de Maria Firmina dos Reis, como o conto "A escrava", de 1887, a novela "Gupeva", de 1861, e 32 poemas: dos quais 29 foram extraídos entre os 56 de Cantos à beira-mar (1871), dois da antologia Parnaso maranhense (1861), e o famoso "Hino à liberdade dos escravos", originalmente escrito para ser cantado e acompanhado por instrumentos musicais. Nesta seleção, apresentam-se alguns dos principais elementos que caracterizam a literatura da escritora: a situação dos escravizados, que passam a ter protagonismo nas narrativas, o papel da mulher na sociedade, as condições dos povos indígenas, um sentimentalismo romântico amoroso e a exaltação da terra.
