About this listen
We’ve grown way too comfortable with the story of Jesus.
Nice man, right? Taught us to love one another. Said not to judge people. Tragically killed by his enemies. We celebrate his birthday every year. It’s time to put away this small, safe version of Jesus, says Cy Kellett, host of Catholic Answers Live. Nobody that bland could have transformed the world as he did.
In A Teacher of Strange Things, Cy presents Jesus Christ undiluted by sentiment or familiarity, with all his radical words and deeds uncensored. Who was Jesus? What did he claim to be? Why did he captivate his followers and foes alike? Should we separate the “Jesus of history” from the “Jesus of faith”? What did Jesus teach? Did he really say he’s the only way? When he commanded us to love and not to sin, what did that mean? Which doctrines did he take for granted and which did he turn upside down? Why do people still follow him? Where does Jesus still live and teach today? How does Jesus fit in a modern world moving away from God? Is it really possible to be friends with someone who died 2,000 years ago?
Cy takes you on a journey of discovery through these questions and many more, helping you see with fresh eyes the once-familiar Jesus Christ. If you are a seeker, you will rethink everything you took for granted about him. If you are his follower, you will come to love him with new and greater zeal.

Story
In The Bible Is a Catholic Book, Jimmy Akin shows how the Bible cannot exist apart from the church. In its origins and its formulation, in the truths it contains, in its careful preservation over the centuries, and in the prayerful study and elucidation of its mysteries, Scripture is inseparable from Catholicism. This is fitting, since both come from God for our salvation. If you're a Catholic who sometimes gets intimidated by the Bible, The Bible Is a Catholic Book will help you better understand and take pride in this gift that God gave the world through the church.

One of Cardinal Ratzinger's most important and widely read books, this volume is a revised second edition with an improved translation and an in-depth preface by the Cardinal. As he states in the preface, since this book was first published over 30 years ago, many changes and significant events have occurred in the world, and in the Church. But even so, he says he is firmly convinced that his fundamental approach in this book is still very timely and crucial for the spiritual needs of modern man.

Of all things Catholic, there is nothing that is so familiar as the Mass. With its unchanging prayers, the Mass fits Catholics like their favorite clothes. Yet most Catholics sitting in the pews on Sundays fail to see the powerful supernatural drama that enfolds them. Pope John Paul II described the Mass as "Heaven on Earth," explaining that what "we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy."

Story
Somehow, this long-discredited economic philosophy is making a comeback, not only on college campuses and political talk shows, but among sincere Catholics. Some think that it could be the answer to greed and globalism. Others even argue that it’s the best way to obey Christ’s command to help the poor. Let’s give socialism a fresh chance, they say. A democratic socialism, this time, friendly to religion and ordered to the common good like the church says the economy should be.

Story
In Reasons to Believe, Scott Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, explains the "how and why" of the Catholic faith - drawing from Scripture, his own struggles, and those of other converts, as well as from everyday life and even natural science. Hahn shows that reason and revelation, as well as nature and the supernatural, are not opposed to one another; rather, they offer complementary evidence that God exists. He is someone, and He has a personality, a personal style, that is discernable and knowable.

Story
Over the past hundred years, scholars have attacked the historical truth of the Gospels and argued that they were originally anonymous and filled with contradictions. In The Case for Jesus, Brant Pitre taps in to the wells of Christian scripture, history, and tradition to ask and answer a number of different questions, including: If we don't know who wrote the Gospels, how can we trust them? How are the four Gospels different from other Gospels, such as the lost Gospel of "Q" and the Gospel of Thomas?

Story
Mary appears only a few times in the Bible, but those few passages come at crucial moments. Catholics believe that Mary is the ever-virgin Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and Earth. But she also was a human being—a woman who made a journey of faith through various trials and uncertainties and endured her share of suffering. In Walking with Mary, Edward Sri looks at the crucial passages in the Bible concerning Mary and offers insight about the Blessed Mother's faith and devotion that we can apply in our daily lives.

The world hates the Church that Jesus founded, just as He said it would (John 15:18). It reviles her doctrines, mocks her moral teachings and invents lies about her history. In every age, but especially in our modern day, historians and political powers have distorted the facts about her past (or just made up novel falsehoods from scratch) to make the Church, and the civilization it fostered, seem corrupt, backward, or simply evil.

Wonderful
Cy keys in on several hard Truths taught by Jesus and insists they are taken literally. Jesus wants us to open our hearts to him and only then can we be true disciples. this book is heavily rooted in Scripture and I appreciated many of the insights Cy was able to provide and unique connections he was able to make.

Worthy of your time!
I’ve long been a fan of Catholic Answers, the radio/podcast show, and had heard through it that Cy Kellett had written a book. On the show he’s sort of your affable Everyman, as he interviews famous authors, professors, priests, and apologists. (This is not to disrespect Cy, I think he’s a great host).
Perhaps it was within that context that I was surprised that this book is as insightful and engaging and entertaining as many of the apologists frequently on the show (such as Scott Hahn)!
The book really shines when it breaks down some of the frequent Biblical scenes, and makes you meditate on the context and realize new insights you probably had never considered. It is also, as the title suggests, in highlighting the utter strangeness and uniqueness of Jesus’s teachings that the book serves great service.
While many books are great at giving answers to a set of specific objections to Catholic belief, whether from atheists or Protestants, few books do as well to address the more common problem of the domestication of Jesus, with Jesus just being a “good guy” or a thing to believe in on the level of American pie, the flag, and socio-political traditions.
So, overall, the book is highly recommended and the audio version is well done too!
