About this listen

From rural Mississippi in the Jim Crow era through the transformative 1970s, this sweeping novel tells the tale of a mother’s sacrifice, relentless ambition, and against-all-odds success. But the one dream she can’t stop chasing may cost her everything....

Money is security. Always. Margo Dupree has lived by that rule since childhood, when her father’s death plunged her and her mother into poverty. Marriage brought only disillusionment and struggle. But it also gave Margo the determination to migrate north in search of a better life for herself and her young daughter, Lana.

The north, however, isn’t the panacea she expected, and Margo finds herself contending with the all-too-familiar obstacles of racism and prejudice, not to mention the new stresses of urban living. But things change once she realizes that what was once her greatest shame is now her greatest asset—the skills she learned from her mother’s job as a cook. Using her tasty recipes, personality, and relentless hustle, Margo begins to build a successful restaurant chain. Yet despite her ever-more desperate efforts, she can't earn her heart’s deepest desire: Lana’s forgiveness for her early absence.

As Lana becomes a beautiful young woman with an increasingly mercenary temperament, Margo wonders if she knows her daughter at all—and if she can save her from the bitter and frighteningly dangerous mistakes that may shatter both of their worlds....

My goodness, this story was quite interesting! However, I hoped Mom would get a grip, and she just didn't. I completely understand wanting to believe your child, striving to be a good parent, and putting a child before a man, or whatever the case may be. But at some point, you have to recognize the red flags. I think her guilt clouded her judgment and prevented her from seeing what was clearly in front of her—something that others could see from the outside.

Margot missed many opportunities and allowed people who shouldn’t have been there into her life. She could have saved a lot of heartache and avoided significant financial debt if she had just stepped back and said no to her child in certain situations.

One of the things I’m most excited about is that her cousin Vanessa finally got herself together. I couldn’t see how that would happen. Vanessa kept returning to someone she shouldn’t have, but eventually, she found someone who accepted her with all her flaws and helped her achieve a better life for herself and her kids. That was a definite positive.

Overall, I find it quite interesting how, in the beginning, Margot echoed the same sentiments to her mom that Lana eventually said to her. Statements like "I don’t want to do this" or "I didn’t go to high school just to be a maid or a cook" reflect a repeating cycle. I wonder if the next book will depict a reawakening or a better outcome for the characters.

The purpose of the next generation is often to be better than the last

I laughed and right when I had enough just the charter did what was needed. I loved it. I was scared she was gone lose it all but how could a good women with a huge heart end up with nothing.
