About this listen
"A graceful love story...and an authentic presentation of the 1860s that reads with the simplicity and visual gusto of a period movie." (Readers' Favorite)
A courtship of convenience.
Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run-of-the-mill London merchant. He's grim and silent. A man of little emotion - or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she's ready to put an end to things.
A last chance for love.
But severing ties with her taciturn suitor isn't as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there's Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What's a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to Appersett House for Christmas and give him one last chance to win her? Only this time, there'll be no false formality. This time, they'll get to know each other for who they really are.

Story
Hidden away in rural Devonshire, Phyllida Satterthwaite has always been considered more odd than beautiful. But in London, her oddity has made her a sensation. Far worse, it’s caught the eye of the sinister Duke of Moreland - a notorious art collector obsessed with acquiring one-of-a-kind treasures. To escape the duke’s clutches, she’s going to need a little help. Captain Arthur Heywood’s days of heroism are long past. Grievously injured in the Peninsular War, he can no longer walk unaided, let alone shoot a pistol. What use can he possibly be to a damsel in distress?

As an incurable bluestocking from a family tumbling swiftly toward ruin, she knows she'll never make a match in a ballroom. Her only hope is to distinguish herself by making the biggest splash in the one sphere she excels: on horseback. In haute couture. Quick, romantic, enjoyable
Wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy this, however I really did enjoy it. It’s a fairly quick listen, around 6hrs. I really liked the characters and you end up rooting for the two main ones!! :)

A Holiday by Gaslight
(May contain a spoiler about HEA!!!!l)
I really enjoyed this book. The only thing I disliked is Sophia's parents & the way she was treated by her family. It would have been nice for her alone to get a HEA. She was the only one that deserved it.

Beautiful love story with a little history
I chose this book because I wanted to hear Alex Wyndham's sexy smooth voice. Mimi Matthews is a new author for me and I will read/listen to her books again. She is wonderfully talented at spinning a story and just as talented in her character development. And Alex Wyndham is chocolate icing on Mimi's cake. I so appreciate Mimi's keeping this story to 4 hours rather than going on and on and on.

perfect
Sophia would not like the word, but it is the perfect short story. Engaging characters. Solid plot and storyline. Appropriate heat for the time and their courtship. (kissing only) And leaves you with deep thoughts on how much progress is too much.
I love this story. Mimi Matthews is a master at story, character, angst, and historically correctness.
And the Narrator, Alex Wyndham, he is my favorite. I am a sucker for a good male voice, he does the female voices well enough. And the inflection and differing the voices are excellent.

A low energy listen
I thought the narrator was excellent, but I would have preferred a woman to do the female parts. There’s just something about a man making his voice higher that bothers me. The story was unique but it felt so relaxing and so low energy of a read- I guess I like them a little spunkier. I think this will be loved by many people but to me it was more liked than loved.
