About this listen

In this newest installment of the acclaimed New York Times bestselling series, Scotland Yard’s Ian Rutledge is faced with his most perplexing case yet: a murder with no body, and a killer who can only be a ghost.

Spring, 1921. Scotland Yard sends Inspector Ian Rutledge to the sea-battered village of Walmer on the coast of Essex, where amongst the salt flats and a military airfield lies Benton Abbey, a grand manor with a storied past. The lady of the house may prove his most bewildering witness yet. She claims she saw a violent murder—but there is no body, no blood. She also insists she recognized the killer: Captain Nelson. Only it could not have been Nelson because he died during the war.

Everyone in the village believes that Lady Benton’s losses have turned her mind—she is, after all, a grieving widow and mother—but the woman Rutledge interviews is rational and self-possessed. And then there is Captain Nelson: what really happened to him in the war? The more Rutledge delves into this baffling case, the more suspicious tragedies he uncovers. The Abbey and the airfield hold their secrets tightly. Until Rutledge arrives, and a new trail of death follows…

As a loyal Charles Todd fan, his latest Ian Rutledge mystery did not disappoint. I must admit to missing Simon Prebble at the beginning, but Vance soon settled into his roles, and claimed them. I love this post WWWl era fictions, and UK-Europe locations and history. Enjoyable listen and rated G!!!

Well Done

The character of Lady Benton was so consistently foolish, always asking questions with painfully obvious answers. That was annoying, but otherwise a good story that was very well read.

Clever, solid mystery with historical color.

I am always so sad when the story ends, can't wait for next one. Loved it.

Loved this latest chapter in Ian Rutledge' s saga. never able to put it down once you open the book

Charles Todd at their best

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

It was a nice installment albeit lacking mystery long before the end. Maybe I am used to more twists in crime fiction, this one fell somewhat flat in that regard.

The narrator is his usual perfection.

Promising start, less promising ending

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

This one lacked real tension and novelty. In addition, the narrator was a bit lugubrious.

Needs to freshen up

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Very twisty plot. Excellent narration. Setting very well evoked. I read this out of order and that was not a problem.

Good plot

First I wanting give my deepest sympathies to the passing Mrs. Todd. I could not stop listening because of all the twists and turns. Great Job - looking forward to the next novel in the series.

Intriguing

Monthly, I look for to the book series, many thank you(s) to the author and narrator.

Wonderful characters

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

I very much liked Inspector Rutledge and his ability to overcome adversity, anticipate things before they happened, and his silent partner – – the voice in his head, Hamish.

Engaging Story
