About this listen

In the summer of 1964, a small advertisement appeared in the personal column of the classified section of the Johannesburg Times newspaper:

‘Fit young men looking for employment
with a difference, at a salary in excess of
$280 per month, should telephone, Johannesburg 55715
during business hours. Employment initially
offered for six months. Immediate start.'

The advert also appeared in several other Southern African newspapers. Tony McManus saw the ad, and though not stated, he knew it was about seeking volunteer recruits to join a mercenary force being formed to go to the Congo to fight in a civil war. He was intrigued. It promised good pay in US dollars and probably danger money. But it also promised risk and adventure; that was what he was looking for. And so it was that as an errant, globetrotting teenager, he signed up with 'Mad Mike' Hoare's 5 Commando. This is the story of 'his year of living dangerously'
