Story
In our unique genomes, every one of us carries the story of our species - births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration, and a lot of sex. But those stories have always been locked away - until now. Who are our ancestors? Where did they come from? Geneticists have suddenly become historians, and the hard evidence in our DNA has completely upended what we thought we knew about ourselves. Acclaimed science writer Adam Rutherford explains exactly how genomics is completely rewriting the human story - from 100,000 years ago to the present.

Traveling across millennia, weaving the experiences and world views of cultures both extinct and extant, The Invention of Yesterday shows that the engine of history is not so much heroic (battles won), geographic (farmers thrive), or anthropogenic (humans change the planet) as it is narrative. Many thousands of years ago, when we existed only as countless small autonomous bands of hunter-gatherers widely distributed through the wilderness, we began inventing stories - to organize for survival, to find purpose and meaning, to explain the unfathomable.

Paris, 1933: Three contemporaries meet over apricot cocktails at the Bec-de-Gaz bar on the rue Montparnasse. They are the young Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and longtime friend Raymond Aron, a fellow philosopher who raves to them about a new conceptual framework from Berlin called phenomenology. Story
Hannah Arendt's insightful observations of the modern world, based on a profound knowledge of the past, constitute an impassioned contribution to political philosophy. In Between Past and Future, Arendt describes the perplexing crises modern society faces as a result of the loss of meaning of the traditional key words of politics: justice, reason, responsibility, virtue, and glory. Through a series of eight exercises, she shows how we can redistill the vital essence of these concepts and use them to regain a frame of reference for the future.

In his groundbreaking and controversial book The DIM Hypothesis, Dr. Leonard Peikoff casts a penetrating new light on the process of human thought and thereby on Western culture and history. In September 1838, a young Englishman named Charles Darwin hit upon the idea that "natural selection" among competing individuals would lead to wondrous adaptations and species diversity. Twenty-one years passed between that epiphany and publication of On the Origin of Species. The human drama and scientific controversy of that time constitute a fascinating, tangled tale that illuminates this cautious naturalist who sparked an intellectual revolution.

Really Interesting
This book covered a ton of historic information when it comes to the great thinkers of the world. It covered quite a variety too. I particularly liked the sections regarding the Catholic church and its background because I was raised Catholic. But it also covered eras in ancient Greece and the Roman empire too.

How modern thought was formed
Sometimes while having conversations with friends, we come to an impasse where our background assumptions sound similar, but our conclusions about the specific topic are world's apart. This book gave me some sort of explanation why. As time passes, and thought changes, the previous thoughts will often bleed into the present, with some changes. I could see that in reality through this book. It's really a story that begins with the Greeks, touches on Christianity at its infancy all the way to how we think today. It's a really, really good book.

Definitely not a textbook!
I will probably listen to this book a few times since there is no way my brain can retain all of the interesting information contained in this book from the first listen. From learning about how the idea of the Atom was proposed in Ancient Greece to how poorly mental health was being dealt with in the 20th century, this book made me curious to learn more about everyone from Plato and Pythagoras to Derrida and Sartre. Definitely worth both reading and listening too as that is the best way to get all of this information planted in your mind. Highly recommend!
