 しかしここでは〈私〉は場違いな存在らしい。
 強烈な「臭い」を求めて、旅は続くーー！

一日たりとも退屈することのなかった香港を後にし、バンコクへと飛んだものの、街も人々も自分の中に響いてこない。やむをえず〈私〉は香港で感じたあの熱気を期待しながら、鉄道でマレー半島を南下し、一路シンガポールへと向かう。途中、ペナンで娼婦の館で寝泊まりし、娼婦たちの屈託のない陽気さに巻き込まれたり、シンガポールの街をぶらつくうちに〈私〉はやっと気がつく。人生と同じように、旅もまた二度と同じことをやり直すわけにはいかないのだった。

第四章　メナムから――マレー半島Ｉ――
オートバイはマフラーをつけずに走り廻り、タクシーは爆音を残して発進、バスも絶え間なく警笛を鳴らす。バンコクは東京よりも香港よりもなお、けたたましい街だった。しかし、ここでは〈私〉は場違いな存在らしいことに気がつくのだった。

第五章　娼婦たちと野郎ども――マレー半島II――
マレー半島を南下してゆく途中、〈私〉はペナンで娼婦の館に滞在した。女たちの陽気さに巻き込まれ、ピクニックに出かけたり、ヒモの若い衆と映画を見たり……。ここは滅法面白い宿だが、このままこうしていてもいいのだろうか……？

第六章　海の向こうに――シンガポール――
シンガポールに着き、〈私〉は香港の幻影ばかりを求めて旅していたことに気がついた。今は、中国文化圏に属さない国の、強烈な臭いのする街へ急ぐべきなのかもしれない。そう、あのインドへ――。
