1.4후퇴 당시 서울은 텅 비어 있었기에 이 시기를 경험한 사람이 매우 드물었으며, 이 냉철하고 극도로 혼란스러운 시기를 꿰뚫어 보고 '작품'이라는 하나의 자족적 세계로 엮어내는 것은 엄두도 못 내던 일이었다. 박완서는 5년에 걸쳐 '한 시대의 상흔'의 기록이자 본인 스스로 '부스럼딱지처럼' 붙이고 산 기억을 더듬어 『목마른 계절』을 완성시키고야 말았다.
