やがてマチルドは、ロワゼルという名の身分の低い役人と結婚しました。

マチルドははなやかに着かざるよゆうはなく、いつも地味な服を着て、いつも不満に思いながらすごしていました。

ある夜のことです。夫はいつになくいそいそと帰ってきました。
「ほら、おまえにいい物をあげよう」
そう言って、一通の封筒を差し出しました。中にはパーティーの招待状が入っていました。

しかし、マチルドは着ていくドレスがないからパーティには行かないと言いはります。
仕方ないので夫は自分のへそくりでドレスを買う約束をしました。

ダンスパーティーの日が近づいてきました。
しかしマチルドは暗い顔で、何かを心配しているように見えました。ドレスはしっかりできあがったというのに……。
夫はふしぎに思って、マチルドにたずねました。マチルドは、身につける宝石が一つもないからパーティに行くのはやめると言いだしました。
困った夫はマチルドの親友のフォレスティエ夫人から宝石を借りたらどうかと提案します…。

1850年生誕。19世紀フランスの作家。なかでも短編小説家として有名でフランス文学の代表的な存在である。葛藤や焦り、人間関係の複雑さなど心理描写が作品にこめられ、多くを執筆した。代表作は短編小説「ボワヴァルの木陰で」。1893年没。
