探偵小説家である寒川は東京の博物館で、社長夫人の小山田静子に出会い、寒川のファンであった彼女と文通を始めるようになった。
そのやり取りの中で寒川は、静子が昔ふった大江春泥という作家から、復讐予告の手紙を受け取っている事実を知る。
いたずらと一笑に付した寒川も、静子の一挙一動を克明に記す大江の偏執的な手紙に恐ろしさと不安を感じる。
寒川は作家としての大江をひどく嫌っていたこともあり、せめて彼の居所だけは突き止めようと、知り合いを頼るが肝心の居場所はわからずにいた。

ところが、遂に大江の魔の手が伸びた。静子の夫である六郎が、隅田川で死体となって発見されたである。
寒川はこの事件を独自に調べて、その手口が大江の「屋根裏の遊戯」という作品の手口と同じであることに気付く。
そして、思わぬ犯人の正体を突き止めるのだが……

＜江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）＞
日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。
