 代々江戸城の茶室を管理し、将軍や大名に茶の接待をする「奥坊主」と呼ばれる職を務めた家柄に育ち、文芸や芸事への興味・関心を早くから持っていた芥川龍之介。
才気にあふれ、世話好きな性格は周りの人々を惹きつけ、たくさん悩みながらもよく笑い、よくしゃべる人だったそうです。
そんな芥川は、東京帝国大学に入学した翌年、高校の同級だった久米正雄らと共に第三次「新思潮」を創刊し、小説や翻訳を発表しました。
次いで第四次「新思潮」を創刊の際に掲載した『鼻』が夏目漱石に認められ、文壇に登ることとなりました。
その後新聞社に入社し、記者としてではなく専業作家として意欲的に執筆活動を続けました。
芥川は、漱石や森鴎外から文体や表現の影響を受けたり、キリシタンもの、江戸を舞台にしたものなど題材に応じて文体を変えたりと、意識的な小説の書き方をしていました。
また、鈴木三重吉により創刊された児童雑誌「赤い鳥」には、初となる童話作品『蜘蛛の糸』を発表、その後も同雑誌を中心に童話作品を相次いで発表し、幅広く作品を世に残しています。


れは自分より二三年前に、大学の史学科を卒業した本間さんの話である。本間さんが維新史に関する、二三興味ある論文の著者だと云う事は、知っている人も多いであろう。僕は昨年の冬鎌倉へ転居する、丁度一週間ばかり前に、本間さんと一しょに飯を食いに行って、偶然この話を聞いた。
それがどう云うものか、この頃になっても、僕の頭を離れない。そこで僕は今、この話を書く事によって、新小説の編輯者に対する僕の寄稿の責を完うしようと思う。もっとも後になって聞けば、これは「本間さんの西郷隆盛」と云って、友人間には有名な話の一つだそうである。して見ればこの話もある社会には存外もう知られている事かも知れない。
本間さんはこの話をした時に、「真偽の判断は聞く人の自由です」と云った。本間さんさえ主張しないものを、僕は勿論主張する必要がない。まして読者はただ、古い新聞の記事を読むように、漫然と行を追って、読み下してさえくれれば、よいのである……©2022 PanRolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
