五兵衛は、これまで体験したことのない地震の後、海面の異常な動きに気がつく。ひとり津波の襲来を予感した五兵衛は、村人たちに危険を知らせるために動き出す。そうして、刈り取ったばかりの大事な稲束に思い切って火をつけた。日は没し、海水が沖へと退き津波の足音が間近に迫るころ、明々と燃える稲むらの火に村人たちは気がついた…。
稲むらの火のお話は、地震後の津波への早期警戒と避難の大切さ、自己犠牲の精神を教えます。実話を元に1896年に小泉八雲が、人命救助のために偉業を成した人物として英語で海外に紹介します。それを読んだ中井常蔵が再話、1937年から国語教材として教科書に掲載されました。
八雲によって海外にも知られていることもあり、2004年のスマトラ島沖地震、2005年のインド洋大津波の際にも注目され、2015年には稲むらの火の元となった11月5日を「世界津波の日」と国連によって制定されました。
