 "日本民話として知られる「さるかに合戦」の後日談を皮肉めいた視点で描いた掌編小説

握り飯を奪った猿を殺し、見事仇討ちを成功させた蟹、臼、蜂、卵であったが、
おとぎ話では描かれていないその後がある。警察に捕まり、投獄されていたのだ。
そして裁判を重ねた結果、蟹は死刑、共犯の臼、蜂、卵は無期徒刑が言い渡される。
死刑が執行された蟹の妻や兄弟たちの生活は狂い始め、やがて三男の蟹は落ちていた握り飯を拾うだろう。
すぐそばの柿の木に猿がいることも知らずに。

芥川龍之介（あくたがわ・りゅうのすけ）
大正期の小説家。1892年東京都生まれ。東大卒。乳児期から母方の実家で育てられた。
東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され
文壇にデビューする。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。
様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去る。
没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設された。
