 大正期に活躍した「新思潮派」の作家、芥川竜之介の代表的な小説。初出は「改造」［1927（昭和2）年］。生前は単行本未収録であり、没後「芥川龍之介全集」第4巻、「大導寺信輔の半生」［岩波書店、1930（昭和5）年］などに収録。

当時の日本社会、人間社会を風刺、批判した小説であり、同じ年の芥川の自殺の動機を考える上で重要な作品の一つと考えられている。
