幕末、多くの殿様たちは二六〇年以上続いた江戸幕府が、まさか崩壊するとは思ってもいなかっただろう。しかし、長州征討で天下の徳川家が敗北し将軍・慶喜は政権を返上（大政奉還）、新政府は武力で全国を統一（戊辰戦争）してしまった。
こうした激動のなかで、多くの藩が時代に即応できず混乱を来し、なかにはお家存亡の危機に陥った殿様たちがいた。
たとえば、藩の尊王攘夷派が暴走し、新政府の転覆をはかったことで、お家をつぶされた久留米藩主・有馬頼咸。大量の贋金をつくったことが発覚し、見せしめとして処罰された福岡藩主・黒田長溥。家臣たちに監禁され、毒殺の有無を確認するため墓をあばかれ解剖された相馬中村藩主・相馬誠胤。改易状態から新天地での開拓に成功した名門仙台藩の亘理伊達邦成など。
