 浄土真宗の開祖・親鸞の教えを弟子の唯円が書き記したとされる仏教書
浄土真宗の僧・唯円が、師である親鸞の死から約二十年後、彼の教えとは異なる教義が世に広まるのを見て歎き、本当の教えを人々に伝えようとして本書を書き記したものといわれている。
全十八条からなる教えの中でも、「善人なをもて往生をとぐ、いはんや悪人をや。」（悪人正機説）は特に有名である。
のちに哲学者の西田幾多郎をはじめ、近代の数々の知識人や作家に影響を与えた。
信心をもってありのままに身を任せるという「他力本願」の姿勢が貫かれた本書は、現代を生きる人々の心の指針としても読みつがれている。
