大学を卒業後、官僚となった太田豊太郎は、ドイツのベルリンへ出張（留学）する。
法律や政治に関する仕事をこなしていたが、しだいに歴史や文学に心酔していき、上司との関係が悪くなっていく。そんな中、街で泣いているエリスに出会う。
ひょんなことから彼女を助けたことにより恋仲になっていく…が、同じく一緒に来ていた仲間に悪い噂をたてられ…
森鷗外初期の代表作。高雅な文体と浪漫的な内容で、主人公・豊太郎がドイツで過ごした日々や恋人エリスとの話を回想するかたちで進んでいく名作。
森鴎外
1862年（文久2年）島根県に生まれる。森家は津和野藩の典医を務めた。10歳の時、父と上京し、官立医学校に入るためにドイツ語を学ぶ。1873年、東京大学医学部に12歳で入学。卒業後は陸軍軍医副になり、東京陸軍病院に勤務し、ドイツの衛生制度を調べるためにドイツに留学。1889年「小説論」、翻訳戯曲を発表するなど軍医でありながら文筆活動をしていた。「陸軍省医務局長まで務めたが、1916年に退官。その後、東京国立博物館に就任。1922年に60歳で死去。©2022 PanRolling
