About this listen

 大衆文学者として活躍した山本周五郎による短編小説。初出は「講談倶楽部」[博文館、1945（昭和20）年12月号]。

父の死後、中村家に引き取られた都留（つる）。ある日主人の惣兵衛に呼ばれ、罪人進藤主計の世話をするよう命じられる。彼は都留の父の仇。形見の懐剣を懐に忍ばせ、仇討ちの機会を伺っていた。

＜山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろう）＞
1903年、山梨県生まれ。横浜市の西前小学校卒業後、東京木挽町の山本周五郎商店に徒弟として住み込む。1926年『須磨寺附近』が「文藝春秋」に掲載され、文壇デビュー作となった。『日本婦道記』が1943年上期の直木賞に推されたが、受賞を辞退。1967年2月14日没。享年63歳。Public Domain (P)Roundemy Co., Ltd. Asian World Literature
