 私は病気で死んだ弟の書斎で物思いにふけっていた。残されていた日記帳のページをめくっていると、「発信欄」と印刷されたところに一人の女性の名前が出て来て驚く。それは私もよく知る北川雪枝という名前の遠縁の娘だった。

弟は雪枝さんに恋していたのかもしれない……かと言って、日記帳の本文に雪枝さんの名前はない。わかるのは弟が雪枝さんにハガキを出した日付と、それに対して雪枝さんからの返事があったという記録だけ。

家探しを続けると、雪枝さんからの11枚のはがきが出て来たが、内容に恋文と思しきものはない。

しかし、日記帳の本文の中に、私は次の様な文句を見つける。
「最後の通信に対してYより絵葉書来る。失望。今になってはもう取返しがつかぬ。ああ」
Yが雪枝さんのイニシャルを指すものと察した私はその真意を知ろうとするが……



＜江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）＞

日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。(c)2018 Pan Rolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
