 私が、ある日電車に乗っていると、同じ車両に乗っている男が、平べったい荷物を風呂敷に包んでいるのを見て奇妙に思った。一度風呂敷に包んであったものを、わざわざ取出して、そんな風に外に向けて立てかけたものとしか考えられなかったのである。
私は男から、荷物の中身を見せてもらうと、そこには泥絵の具で描いた座敷の中に、老人と、それにしなだれかかる若い女を描いた精巧な押絵細工が施してある。私はその押絵細工がまるで生きているかのように見えた。
男は私に、少し離れて遠眼鏡で押絵を見るように促す。私は言われた通りにしようとすると、押絵で描かれた老人と若い女の生々しさに、この世ならぬものを見た思いをするのだった。
私は男から身の上話を聞くと、更にその内容は想像を超えた不可思議なものだったのである……



江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）
日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。(c)2018 Pan Rolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
