夫の佐藤寅雄によると、逃走した犯人はおそらく美禰子が結婚する前に付き合っていた青木茂、関根五郎のどちらかであろうと言う。
痴情のもつれによるごく簡単な事件に見えたのだが、両名ともにアリバイはないものの、現場付近に目撃者はない。また兇器も見つかっていない。決定的な証拠に欠けているのだ。
港区S署の巡査部長・庄司専太郎は、一年ほど前から付き合いのある素人探偵・明智小五郎に知恵を借りに来た。
しかし明智は「兇器を探し出すこと」「容疑者の当夜の行動を今一度調べること」というわかりきっている常識的な助言と、もう一つ、とある物を調べるように言うのだ。
それから十日ののち、犯人を捕らえることができないまま新たな被害者が出てしまう。佐藤寅雄が殺されてしまったのだ。それも庄司巡査部長がいる現場で――
しかし今度は犯人の靴跡が残っていた。警察はすぐさま逮捕に乗り出したのだが、またしても兇器は見つからず容疑者は頑強に否認している。
