二年の留学中に一度だけ「余」は倫敦塔を見物した。イギリスの歴史の象徴である倫敦塔の建物を、塔橋からテームス川の向こうに見た時は忘我の心地だった。

塔門を入った「余」は中塔、鐘塔を視界に捉えながら進む。そして、逆賊門、血塔、白塔を見て歩き、過去の出来事に想いを馳せながらボーシャン塔へ向かった。

そこへ行く途中の刑場跡で七歳くらいの男の子を連れた、若く美しい女を見かける。「あの鴉は五羽います」という女の言葉を聞いて、「余」は不思議な思いを抱きながらも、悲惨な歴史が刻まれたボーシャン塔へ向かっていくのだが……

＜夏目漱石（なつめ・そうせき）＞
日本の小説家、評論家、英文学者。森鴎外と並ぶ明治・大正時代の文豪である。1867年（慶応3）江戸牛込馬場下横町（現在の東京都新宿区喜久井町）に生まれる。本名は夏目金之助。東京帝国大学英文科卒業後、東京高等師範学校、松山中学、熊本第五高等学校などの教師生活を経て、1900年、イギリスに留学。帰国後、第一高等学校、東京帝国大学の講師を務める。1905年、処女作『吾輩は猫である』を発表。翌年『坊っちゃん』『草枕』を発表。1907年、教職を辞し、朝日新聞社に入社。以後、朝日新聞に『虞美人草』『三四郎』『それから』『門』『彼岸過迄』『行人』『こころ』『道草』などを連載するが、1916年（大正5）12月9日、『明暗』の連載途中に胃潰瘍で永眠。享年50歳。
