 中島敦が学生時代「校友会雑誌」に掲載した短編作品で
伊豆への旅行の際、体験したものを題材として描かれている。

失恋によって神経衰弱になってしまった都会の青年が
伊豆下田のカフェーで一人の女性と出会う。
相手の男によって様々な顔を覗かせる女性を前に驚きを
隠せない青年を描く。
異性を魅了する女性とそれに翻弄される青年を
格調高く重厚な文体で描いた中島敦初期の作品。

中島敦（なかじま・あつし）
昭和時代前期の小説家。1909年東京生れ。東大国文科卒。
祖父は漢学者中島撫山、伯父にも漢学者が多く、父は中学の漢文教師。
1933年横浜高等女学校の教師となり、かたわら作家を志して習作にはげんだ。
持病の喘息悪化のため、転地療養を兼ねて41年パラオの南洋庁に赴任する。
唐代の伝奇「人虎伝」を素材にした「山月記」が深田久弥の推挽で42年2月の「文学界」に掲載され文壇にデビュー。同年5月発表の《光と風と夢》も好評で以後創作に専念。
パラオ南洋庁書記の職を辞して作家生活に入ろうとしたが、同年12月持病の喘息のために夭折した。代表作に「李陵(りりょう)」「弟子」「光と風と夢」など。©2022 PanRolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
