左右田五郎は、ある事件について話していた。彼はちょうどその現場に居合わせたのだという。
十月十日の午前四時、富田博士邸裏の鉄道線路で、富田博士の妻である婦人が列車に轢かれて亡くなった。
懐中に遺書があり、自身の病気を苦に自殺をする旨がしたためられていたが、黒田清太郎という刑事はそれを疑って捜査を進めた。黒田刑事は証拠を元に、この事件が自殺ではなく富田博士による他殺であると推理する。そして夫人の遺体からは毒物が検出されたのであった。
