14歳ぐらいの美少年タッジオの虜になったアッシェンバッハは、タッジオの姿を見るだけでは飽き足らず、次第に後を追い掛け回すようになる。しかし、そのころヴェニスでは、恐ろしい伝染病であるコレラが蔓延しつつあった……。
