 精神病と闘いながらも家族を守ろうとするある女性の晩年を
描いた島崎藤村の短編小説。

六十歳になる「おげん」は夫と一人息子を亡くしており
娘には知的障害がある為、精神を蝕まれている。
現状を打開するため甥っ子も連れて親類のもとを訪ね歩くが
行く先々では常に問題が起こるばかりである。
島崎藤村の長姉をモデルとしたものであり、精神症状の描写から
内面に抱える様々な思いが垣間見える作品。
島崎藤村（しまざき・とうそん）
詩人・小説家。筑摩県馬籠村(現岐阜県中津川市)出身。本名は春樹。
明治学院在学中に洗礼を受けるとともに文学への関心を強め、
北村透谷らと「文学界」を創刊。また詩集『若菜集』で浪漫派詩人として大きな業績を残した。
のち散文に転じ、『破戒』で自然主義の小説家として出発する。
1929年から「中央公論」に連載された『夜明け前』は自伝的藤村文学の集大成となった。
