立方体の模写は、標準的な子どもであれば大体7歳から9歳までの間にクリアする課題である。しかし著者は少年院に、立方体が描けない中学生や高校生が数多く収容されていることに気づく。「見たり聞いたりする力の弱さが非行の原因なのでは？」と考え、認知機能を強化するトレーニング法を探すも、適当なものが見当たらない。「これは自分で作るしかない」と腹をくくり、周囲の協力も得て、社会性や身体性をも伸ばす教材「コグトレ」を考案。本書ではその内容と、少年たちがトレーニングで変化したプロセス、さらに子どものモチベーションについて親に知っておいてほしいことを綴る。
