Роман "Белый отряд" стал первым серьезным историческим произведением Конан-Дойля. В нем автор обратился к критическому этапу в истории феодальной Англии, взяв за основу реальный исторический эпизод 1366 года, когда в Столетней войне наступило затишье и стали возникать "белые отряды" добровольцев и наемников.

Продолжая войну на территории Франции, они при этом сыграли решающую роль в борьбе претендентов за испанский престол. В своем романе Конан-Дойль воскресил быт и нравы того времени, а главное, представил в героическом ореоле рыцарство, к тому времени уже находившееся в упадке. Впервые "Белый отряд" был напечатан в журнале "Корнхилл", издатель которого, объявил его "лучшим историческим романом после "Айвенго"".
