This is my second anthology of poems. I do not claim to be a poet. I have no pretensions in that direction. I just like writing. Sometimes ideas and feelings come out as what I describe as poems and sometimes they come out as my version of novels. For me it is all about communication and playing with words. It would be very easy to assume that a book titled “Life Through Stoned Eyes” would be centered around the marijuana-induced ruminations of a poetic pot-head. This, of course, would be a shallow assumption and one that not only misses the mark but completely shifts the mark. These are poems that I wrote when I lost two women that have played a role in my child-hood, my grand-mother and aunt. They both passed away this year, I mourned for them and wrote these poems. They tormented my life when I was young. I held the hands that once beaten me with love instead of with revenge. I forgave them, prayed for them and loved them before they died. In all these I thank God of heaven.

I wrote these poems when someone said to me “Doreen, just be content it is not yet time for you to prosper”. Another person said to me “my Pastor said an elephant is pregnant for 18 months. So don’t’ rush to want to prosper”. I told the person, I’m not an elephant but a human being. I did not have any source of income, begging for accommodation, food and clothing. I no longer had the luxury of buying myself clothes but wore second hand clothes some were too small or too big. I was told “remember beggars are not choosers”. There are a range of poems here that date from the 1970s right up to yesterday. I write poems if I have something inside yearning to be expressed. I can encapsulate it into a succinct form as a poem. The writing that goes with the poems are every bit as important to me as the poem itself. My poems are explosions of passion.

Life in poetry is an anthology of poems written about the everyday events in life, which accumulate to be the moments we remember and cherish as we make the journey that is our life.
