About this listen

Shy, young heiress Lady Lily Rutherford is in no hurry to marry. She dreams of true love and a real courtship. But when disaster strikes, she finds herself facing a scandal-forced marriage to her rescuer, Edward Galbraith, a well-known rake.

Despite his reputation, Lily is drawn to the handsome Galbraith. In the gamble of her life, she agrees to marry him, hoping to turn a convenient marriage into a love match.

As heir to a title, Galbraith knows he must wed, so a convenient marriage suits him perfectly. But there is a darkness in his past and secrets he refuses to share with his tender-hearted, young bride. All Lily's efforts to get close to him fall on stony ground, and in desperation, she retreats to his childhood home - the place he's avoided for nearly a decade.

Must Lily reconcile herself to a marriage without love? Or will Galbraith realize that this warm-hearted, loving girl is the key to healing the wounds of his past - and his heart?

Contains mature themes.

I like this series. Problem is that the mystery is interesting but often gets put in the back burner. This one was a bit more exciting. The formula is even more formulaic than usual. Marriage of convenience. Woman falls quickly in love. We all know man is in love too but he is in denial and she can’t believe it. Then she is missing or in danger and he realizes he totally loves her. One thing that saves these for me is there is some day to day living where H and H get to know each other. I’d say worth a listen but I’d start at the beginning of the series.

Pretty darn good

As with previous books I have listened to by author Anne Gracie, I enjoyed this one . I laughed and chuckled my way to the end. I must say that while I enjoy the story and the characters, both are brought to life by the narrations of Alison Larkin. All I can say is she is "simply delightful". Unfortunately, all of this series now requires you to upgrade in order to listen to any of these books.
I really don't like when they do this. I MISS AUDIBLE ESCAPE WHERE YOU COULD LISTEN TO ALL THE BOOKS.

Very enjoyable

Good

I’m torn because this author is seemingly flawless, but the first one was so much better than this one. Maybe it’s because there were so many more characters to introduce? Either way, another gem!!

WONDERFUL! I am a huge fan of Jane Austen and bought this because the narrator was the same as my favorite Jane Austen narrator - Alison Larkin who has read all of Austen's novels and I just love her voice and the depth and lightness that she brings to Austen - and the wit. I loved Alison Larkin's narration of Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice with Songs from Regency England and I was in the mood for more Regency fare and I found this. And I am so glad I did! I just found out that Anne Gracie has a whole other series too. The Spring, Autumn, Winter and Summer Bride series ALSO read by Alison Larkin! Heaven! What a find! Loved this.

PERFECT narration! WONDERFUL series!

Likable characters, interesting plot, great secondary characters, strong romance. My only quibble would be the narrator. She was wonderful, dramatic, excellent at distinguishing voices so you always knew who was speaking! But I think she mispronounced the word for party which in those days was pronounced “rowt,” not “root”! And ton, which is French and easy to pronounce in French- sounds more like tone than ton.

Wonderful

Narrator Alison Larkin was okay, but not great! She had a lisp or something that entered into all her voices. Some of the men sounded like women. However, author, Anne Gracie, wrote a very good story! I like the tale of Lily Rutherford finding a marriage partner in Edward Galbraith,(a supposed rake) after he saved her from being abducted! Their forced marriage (because of the scandal) was a complicated path ~ complicated mostly by Edward! Lily loved him from the start of their marriage, but Edward had a lot of personal problems that Lily eventually helped him work through. Like thinking that all his former tenants, whose sons he had led to fight the war, were killed because of his leading them over to war! I find that many problems where WE think that WE are at fault, are quite self-centered at heart, if we think about it! Also, Lily helped Edward with his fear of falling in love with her. He couldn't eventually help himself, because she was so kind, thoughtful, and patient! I loved the part of the book where Lily visited Edward's grandfather, and spend weeks getting to know him. He and his grandson, Edward, loved each other, but Edward was afraid to go to his ancestral home because of his guilt towards the tenants and their lost sons (who had been his close friends and playmates). But it hurt his grandfather tremendously ~ and he and Lily's time together was a great balm to his grandfather, even though he still missed Edward. I'm so glad that Edward found out, (through Lily's insistence that he visit the tenants) that they did not blame him for their son's deaths! He was only 18 when he led them to war, and the tenants all realized that their sons would have gone to war with or without Edward. Lily, who thought so little of herself, was really a grand person! She helped so many people!!!

Good book!
